Thomas R. Zengage earned his undergraduate degree from Columbia College at Columbia University in New York City, where he studied Chinese. After graduate studies in Japanese at the University of Washington in Seattle, he received his MBA from the same institution. Fluent in Japanese, Mr. Zengage has had an extensive career in strategy consulting in Japan, working on behalf of leading corporations, government agencies, and other organizations in areas spanning business development, future technology requirements, and policy making. Mr. Zengage has extensively conducted contracted overt analysis on behalf of various governmental agencies with respect to a variety of Japanese strategic issues, including defense program procurement, dual use technology transfer, and research and development of advanced strategic systems and materials. He was previously CEO and a principal shareholder of IBI Inc., a pioneering Japanese consulting firm. WPP Group plc ultimately purchased IBI Inc., whereupon Mr. Zengage became CEO of a WPP group company in Japan. Subsequently Mr. Zengage served as Chairman of Edelman Public Relations Japan. Writing in Japanese, Mr. Zengage is the author of the well-reviewed business book Sore Demo Yen No Seiki (Tokyo: Kodansha), which contains an analysis of the long term factors driving Japan's economy.
